MAJOR GENERAL MERVYN TAN

MG Mervyn Tan Wei Ming was appointed as Chief of Air Force on 28 March 2016. He joined the SAF in December 1990 and graduated from the SAF Officer Cadet School in 1991. He pursued an Engineering (Aeronautical) degree at the University of Sydney, Australia and graduated with First Class Honours in 1996, under the Overseas Training Award (Graduating). He attended the US Air Command and Staff College from 2004 to 2005, where he graduated with a Master in Operational Art & Science of War and achieved the best overall academic and research award for an international officer. He was also awarded the SAF Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship (General Development) in 2010 and graduated with a Master of Business Administration from the MIT Sloan School of Management.

MG Mervyn has held various appointments in the SAF. Between 2005 and 2007, he was involved in the fundamental restructuring of the RSAF into its present task-organised structure. From 2007 to 2008, he served as the Commanding Officer of 121 SQN. As an operational pilot, he has participated in numerous overseas exercises in countries such as Australia, Brunei, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand.

He rose to the position of Head Air Plans (HAP) in 2008, which he held for 2 years. As HAP, he was involved in the delivery of major warfighting capabilities for the RSAF as well as the management of the RSAF’s strategic manpower and budgetary resources. He was the Deputy Commander of Air Defence and Operations Command (ADOC) from 2011 to 2012 and took over as Commander ADOC from 2012 to 2014. As Commander ADOC, he was responsible for the execution of all RSAF peacetime operations and for the training of the RSAF’s C2 and Ground-based Air Defence forces.

MG Mervyn then assumed the appointment of Director Military Inteligence (DMI)/Chief Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (C4I) from February 2014 to February 2016. As DMI/Chief C4I, he played a key role in raising, training and sustaining the military intelligence community to ensure that the SAF remains at the forefront of military intelligence amidst an evolving security environment.

MG Mervyn was awarded the Public Administration Medal (Silver)(Military) in 2010.

MG Mervyn is married to Gina Yip and has two children, Lucas and Kristel. His hobbies include golf, running and reading.
